Trailer Brakes Explained
Electric drum brakes, brake controllers, the breakaway system and why the 7-way plug matters. What comes on the trailer and what your tow vehicle has to supply.
Why trailers have their own brakes
A tow vehicle's brakes are sized for the vehicle. Add a 7,000 lb trailer and stopping distance grows sharply unless the trailer helps. Trailer brakes also keep the combination straight; a trailer that is braking behind the truck pulls it into line instead of pushing it sideways. Most states require brakes on trailers above a GVWR somewhere between 3,000 and 4,500 lb, and manufacturers fit them on nearly everything in the tandem-axle range regardless.
What you will find on our trailers
- Electric drum brakes are standard on cargo, car hauler, dump and equipment trailers. Each braked axle has a drum at each wheel with an electromagnet that, when energized, drags on the drum face and levers the shoes out. They are simple, easily adjusted and inexpensive to service.
- Brakes on one axle or both. Many 7,000 lb tandem trailers have brakes on both axles; some lighter builds brake only one. 9,990 lb and heavier units brake both. The listing states the configuration.
- Electric over hydraulic appears on some heavier equipment trailers and goosenecks, using an electric pump to operate hydraulic disc or drum brakes for more stopping force. The tow vehicle still needs a standard controller.
- Surge brakes, a hydraulic system activated by the trailer pushing on the coupler, are common on boat trailers and some rental units, not on the trailers we sell.
The brake controller
Electric brakes do nothing without a controller in the tow vehicle. The controller senses deceleration, or reads the vehicle's brake signal, and sends a proportional voltage to the trailer brakes through the 7-way plug.
- Factory integrated controllers are common on modern pickups and some SUVs, usually with a gain setting and a manual slider on the dash.
- Aftermarket proportional controllers mount under the dash or in the plug itself and work the same way.
- Time-delay controllers ramp up braking on a timer rather than in proportion to deceleration; they work but feel less natural.
Setting the gain: on a dry, empty lot at 20 to 25 mph, apply the manual override. Raise the gain until the trailer tires are just short of locking, then back off a notch. Re-check with the trailer loaded; the right gain for an empty trailer is too low for a full one.
The 7-way RV plug
Braked trailers use the 7-way RV blade connector. Its pins carry ground, tail and marker lights, left and right turn and stop, the brake output from the controller, a 12 V charge line, and reverse or auxiliary. The charge line keeps the breakaway battery topped up and, on dump trailers, helps keep the pump battery charged. A 4-flat connector has no brake circuit; adapters exist for lights only, but the brakes will not work through one.
Keep the plug clean and the pins tight. A corroded ground pin is the most common cause of flickering lights and weak brakes.
The breakaway system
Every braked trailer has a small battery in a box on the tongue, a switch with a pull pin, and a cable. The cable clips to the tow vehicle, not to the safety chains or the ball. If the trailer separates, the pin pulls, the battery applies the trailer brakes for several minutes, and the trailer stops on its own. Check the battery charge periodically and never tow with the pin pulled or the cable missing.
Adjustment and wear
Electric drum brakes have a star-wheel adjuster behind a rubber plug on the backing plate. New trailers should be adjusted after the first few hundred miles once the shoes seat, then checked with every bearing service. Signs they need attention: a brake pedal that feels like the trailer is not helping, a burning smell from one wheel, or a trailer that pulls to one side when the manual override is applied.
Magnets wear flat over time and drums groove; both are routine replacements. Wiring chafe along the axle and frame is the other common fault.
Capacity, ratings and the tow vehicle
Brake assemblies are sized by axle rating: 10 in. drums on 3,500 lb axles, 12 in. on 5,200 to 7,000 lb, 12-1/4 in. on 8,000 lb and up. The trailer's brakes match its GVWR. What they cannot do is make up for a tow vehicle rated below the loaded trailer weight. Tow rating, payload and GCWR come from the vehicle manufacturer and are printed on the door-jamb label and in the owner's manual. Check them independently of anything on the trailer.

- 7-way plug seated, lights and brakes test with the manual override.
- Breakaway cable clipped to the vehicle, pin in place.

- No dragging wheel after the first mile; touch each hub for heat at the first stop.

Questions
Do I need a brake controller?
Yes, for any trailer with electric brakes. Without one the trailer brakes never receive a signal. Many newer trucks and SUVs have one built in; otherwise an aftermarket proportional controller is the usual fit.
Can I tow a braked trailer with a 4-flat connector?
The lights will work through an adapter, but the brakes and breakaway charge line will not. Install a 7-way RV socket and a controller before towing a braked trailer.
How often do electric brakes need adjustment?
After the first few hundred miles on a new trailer, then at each bearing service or roughly once a season under regular use. Adjust sooner if braking feels weak or uneven.
What does the breakaway cable attach to?
A solid point on the tow vehicle's hitch or frame, separate from the safety chains and the ball, so it pulls the pin if the trailer separates.
