Understanding Trailer Payload

Payload is the number that matters when the forklift is lowering something onto your deck. Learn how to calculate it, where the weight goes, and how tongue weight fits in.

Payload is GVWR minus empty weight

Every trailer has two weights that matter before you load it. The first is GVWR, the maximum loaded weight the manufacturer certifies. The second is the empty weight of the trailer itself, also called curb weight, unladen weight or tare. Payload is the difference:

Payload = GVWR − empty weight

A 7x16 tandem-axle cargo trailer with a 7,000 lb GVWR and a 2,400 lb empty weight has about 4,600 lb of payload. A 14,000 lb GVWR equipment trailer that weighs 3,400 lb empty carries roughly 10,600 lb. The heavier the trailer is built, the more of the GVWR it uses up on itself, which is why two trailers with the same GVWR can have very different payloads.

We list both numbers on every unit. If you are comparing listings, compare payload, not GVWR alone.

What counts against payload

Everything that is on the trailer when it rolls down the road counts:

  • The main load: vehicle, machine, material, furniture.
  • Fuel and fluids inside whatever you are hauling.
  • Attachments, buckets, forks and implements.
  • Ramps, chains, binders, straps, wheel chocks and the spare tire if they were not included in the listed empty weight.
  • Accessories added after purchase: toolboxes, shelving, cabinets, generators, winches, spare fuel cans, interior finish work in an enclosed trailer.

That last group catches people. A race trailer with cabinets, a tire rack, a generator and a full water tank may give up 800 to 1,500 lb of payload before the car goes in.

Where the weight sits matters as much as how much

Payload is a total, but axles have their own limits. Each axle carries a GAWR, and no single axle may exceed its rating even if the trailer as a whole is under GVWR. Practical consequences:

  • A heavy load placed well behind the axles can overload the rear axle on a tandem while lifting weight off the tongue.
  • A load placed too far forward overloads the front axle and the coupler.
  • Tandem axles are meant to share weight roughly equally. A correctly positioned load does that automatically.

The target is to place the center of gravity of the load slightly ahead of the axle group's centerline. On a car hauler that usually means the engine sits over or just forward of the front axle. On an equipment trailer it means the heavy end of the machine faces the truck.

Tongue weight is part of payload

Tongue weight is the downward force the coupler puts on the hitch ball. For bumper-pull trailers, a loaded tongue weight of about 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight keeps the trailer stable. For goosenecks, 15 to 25 percent is normal.

Tongue weight is not extra capacity; it is part of the loaded trailer weight that happens to rest on the truck rather than on the trailer's axles. That has two implications:

  • It counts against the tow vehicle's payload and its hitch rating, which are printed on the vehicle door-jamb label and in the owner's manual. Always check those numbers rather than assuming the truck can take it.
  • Too little tongue weight causes sway. Too much overloads the hitch and lightens the truck's steering axle.

A tongue weight scale or a bathroom scale with a lever arrangement will tell you where you stand. Most owners who take the time to measure once are surprised by the result.

Worked example

Say you are looking at a 20 ft open car hauler with a 9,990 lb GVWR and an empty weight of 2,300 lb. Payload is 7,690 lb. Your car weighs 4,100 lb with a full tank. Add 120 lb for straps and a jack, and a 250 lb toolbox on the tongue. Loaded trailer weight is 6,770 lb, comfortably inside GVWR, and the tongue weight target is 680 to 1,000 lb.

Now check the truck. If its door-jamb payload is 1,600 lb and you have 400 lb of people and gear in the cab, the tongue weight uses most of what remains. That is the calculation that decides whether the combination is safe, and it lives on the truck, not on the trailer.

Planning for growth

If your loads are trending heavier, buy payload now. Moving from a 7,000 lb to a 9,990 lb or 14,000 lb GVWR often adds only a few hundred pounds of empty weight while adding thousands of pounds of usable payload, plus bigger brakes, heavier tires and a stronger coupler.

Where do I find the empty weight of a trailer?

It is listed on each of our unit pages. Some manufacturers also print it on the VIN plate or the certificate of origin. A certified scale is the only way to confirm the real number after accessories are added.

Does tongue weight count against trailer payload?

Yes. It is part of the loaded trailer weight that rests on the hitch instead of the trailer axles. It also counts against the tow vehicle's own payload rating.

How much tongue weight should a bumper-pull trailer have?

A common target is 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight. Goosenecks typically run 15 to 25 percent. Too little causes sway; too much overloads the hitch.

If the trailer is under GVWR, can one axle still be overloaded?

Yes. Each axle has its own GAWR. A badly placed load can exceed one axle's rating while the total stays under GVWR. Center the load slightly ahead of the axle group.

Will adding shelving and a generator to an enclosed trailer reduce what I can haul?

Yes. Every accessory adds to the empty weight and subtracts from payload. Weigh the trailer after the build-out so you know the real number.
